The EURECCA-project: improving quality of cancer care through audits

Urged by the considerable differences in cancer survival rates between European countries, the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) initiated an International, Multidisciplinary, Outcome-based Quality Improvement Project which has been fully embraced by the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO).

The ECCO has set the same goal: “Uphold the right of all European cancer patients to the best possible treatment and care”. Registration of outcome-based quality audit registries will provide transparency, benchmarking as well as internal feed-back which will rapidly lead to improvements in cancer care.

Currently, EURECCA focusses on colorectal cancer audit registries. Besides, EURECCA upper GI and breast cancer has been initiated. Future plans are made for pancreatic cancer and HPB.

Momentarily, datasets have been harmonized to facilitate analyses with respect to national privacy legislations. The first analyses comparing the use of neo adjuvant treatment in rectal cancer have started.
